Masks

Whilst visiting Ngwenya Glass in Swaziland, Devereux noticed that a number of tourists would buy ‘African Masks’ to take home.

Masks are prevalent in cultures across the globe (although ironically those particular masks had been adopted for visitors) and he studied many of the European and Roman versions through the ages.

Resonant of the Roman Cavalry Mask, Devereux sculpts from within, creating a form which doesn’t hide whats beneath it, but veils and distorts the face of the wearer.

They are evocative of a time and tradition forgotten, or not yet found.
